2. Amazon distribution center set to begin operations in Katy

Employees at the new Amazon fulfillment center on the west side of Katy may begin working in the new facility today. The Katy City Council approved improvements to water and sewage infrastructure on the west side of the city Saturday morning.

The vote occurred during a special session Saturday at 8 a.m. and all four council members present voted in favor of the measure.

The improvements were installed by Clay Development and Duke realty in anticipation of the distribution center’s need for water and sewer services. The city’s engineer, David Leyendecker, said the improvements had been inspected and were ready for use. Water and sanitary sewer lines as well as a sanitary lift station had been added along Highway 90 between Stonegate Drive and Brookline Road. Similar items are installed from Brookline Road to the Amazon distribution center near Woods Road.

After the meeting, Mayor Chuck Brawner explained that the city was working to quickly allow Amazon to begin operations. The distribution center is expected to provide 800 full time and 250 seasonal or part time jobs to the Katy area. For more information about jobs at the fulfillment center, click here.

“Their approval sticker will come out Monday and be there so all the people [Amazon has] hired over the last few weeks, they can all start going in there [because] they’ve got their occupancy permit,” Brawner said.
