District officials provided the board of trustees with an update at the December board meeting on plans to carry out the projects detailed in the bond package. Phase 1 includes renovations to Pridgeon Stadium along with design work for two future elementary schools.
During phases 2 and 3, district officials will begin design work on the Matzke Elementary replacement and Middle School No. 19 and purchase new buses and instructional technology.
Work on the new schools and major campus renovations are expected to take the longest to complete, said Roy Sprague, associate superintendent for facilities, construction and support services.
In addition to the schools, the bond package also includes a new agriculture center, second natatorium, site purchases and a cold food warehouse.
Year in Review
Cy-Fair ISD
- In February, the board of trustees approved the rezoning of about 20 schools in an effort to clean up feeder patterns and reduce elementary enrollment numbers.
- Voters approved a $1.2 billion bond referendum in May that will help pay for new schools and security and technology improvements through 2020.
- CFISD was one of 46 school districts statewide to receive a five-star rating from state Comptroller Susan Combs for academic and financial performance for the 2013–14 academic year.
- A new statewide math curriculum was adopted in August, requiring students and teachers in CFISD to adapt to the new overhaul—the first since 1998.
- For the first time in seven years, the CFISD board of trustees voted to lower the district's property tax rate by 1 cent. The 2014–15 tax rate stands at $1.44 per $100 of valuation.
- Work progressed on the district's multischool site in the western portion of Cy-Fair at FM 529 and Westgreen Boulevard. The 179-acre Hegar site will house an elementary, middle and high school campus.
- CFISD starting teachers are among the highest paid in the Greater Houston area following the passage of the 2014–15 budget, which contained a starting salary of $50,025 for new teachers.
- Cy-Fair ISD celebrated its 75th anniversary Dec. 9 with the unveiling of a commemorative marker at Cy-Fair High School. Additional celebrations for the district's anniversary are set through the spring semester.
- The Cypress Ranch High School football team fell to Allen High School, 47–16, in the UIL Class 6A Division I state championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Dec. 20. The team finished the 2014 season with a 13-3 record.
