A lot is going on in the Cy-Fair  and Greater Houston area this month, but here are the top stories residents need to know about before heading into the week of Sept. 26, 2016.

1. County commissioners will vote on the Houston Astrodome project's progress.


Harris County Commissioners will vote tomorrow morning on whether to move forward with the Houston Astrodome revitalization project. Assuming the Texas Historical Commission approves the plan, the county would spend $10.5 million to complete the design phase of the project. The vote will take place Tuesday at 9 a.m. on the ninth floor of the Harris County Administration Building, 1001 Preston Avenue, Houston.

2. Mark Kilkenny is set to speak at this month's Community Growth Committee meeting.


Mark Kilkenny, executive vice president of development and governmental affairs for Mischer Investments, will be the guest speaker at this month’s Community Growth Committee. Mischer is the developer behind the master-planned community Cypress Creek Lakes. He will speak Tuesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce Office, 8711 Hwy. 6, Ste. 120., Houston.

3. Both sides will be represented at the High Speed Rail Forum. 


This Wednesday, State Rep. Mike Schofield, R-Katy, will host and moderate a forum on the impending project from 6-8 p.m. at Cypress Ranch High School, 10700 Fry Road, Cypress. Both sides of the project—Texas Central Partners, LLC and Texans Against High-Speed Rail—have confirmed their participation and presentation of their respective positions. Schofield will follow up the presentations with a question and answer session open to the public.

4. Radio personality Jim Pruett will be honored at a public memorial. 


A public memorial service will be held to honor local radio personality Jim Pruett, who died of heart failure Sept. 2 at age 72. “Stevens & Pruett” was part of Houston’s former Rock 101 KLOL lineup, and he also held a role at Cypress Radio. After retiring from the radio industry, he opened Jim Pruett’s Guns & Ammo, which was located off Huffmeister Road until closing in 2014. The memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. this Saturday at The Pub Fountains, 12720 Southwest Fwy., Stafford. The family requests all monetary donations are sent to Stevens & Pruett Ranch, which serves troubled teenage boys and rescued animals.

5. Sample ballots are posted, and the voter registration deadline is approaching.


Harris County residents must register to vote by Oct. 11 to cast their votes in the Nov. 8 election. Early voting will be available from Oct. 24 through Nov. 4. Sample ballots are posted online.
