Although there are many businesses in Cy-Fair offering athletic goods, few focus on fast-pitch baseball and softball with the knowledge and experience of the management at Cypress Fastpitch Sports.
“We carry stuff that girls need to play but usually have to purchase online,” said John Johnson, the Cypress resident who opened the shop near Dyess Park in July. “We’ve found that people prefer to buy equipment in person, not only because its faster, but a lot of the things we sell are things you want to try on and test before you buy.”
Johnson became familiar with fast-pitch softball and baseball after coaching his daughters’ Cy-Fair ISD teams. The shop’s inventory includes the necessities, such as uniforms, cleats, balls, composite bats and professional gloves. Johnson also provides apparel for families and fans and equipment for teams to use during practice.
Business has been good for the shop so far. The holiday season brought in a lot of customers, and now Johnson said he is preparing for the start of high school tryouts in January.
“The players might have an offseason, but we don’t,” he said.
The store’s location was strategically chosen to catch the attention of traveling teams playing tournaments at Dyess Park, Johnson said.
“We have a lot of people who drive by and see us on their way to a game and make a note to stop in later,” he said. “Dyess is one of the best softball parks in Houston.”
