With 102 of 102 voting centers reporting, Susan Sample has won the race for mayor for West University, attaining 51.7% of the vote, with 1,889 votes. Her opponent, Kevin Trautner, garnered 1,765 votes.

Meanwhile, after a tight race amongst the nine candidates seeking one of four positions on the West University Place city council, the four winners have emerged: John Montgomery garnered the most votes, with 1,814, while Melanie Bell came second, with 1,607 votes.

The last two seats on the council, meanwhile, were won by Shannon Carroll, with 1,494 votes, and incumbent John Barnes, with 1,474 votes.

The results for West University Place come after more clear-cut races in Southside Place.



Andy Chan won a convincing race for Southside Place mayor, while Jennifer Anderson won the race for City Council Position 3, with 87% and 75% of the vote, respectively.

Despite all voting centers reporting, the results remain unofficial until canvassed.

With 92 of 102 voting centers reporting, Andy Chan has won the race for Southside Place mayor, while Jennifer Anderson has won the race for City Council Position 3.


Chan has garnered nearly 87% of the vote with 346 votes, compared to opponent Savvas Stefanides, who managed to garner 52 votes. Anderson, meanwhile, commands 75% of the votes in the race for Position 3 — at 283 votes — as Harris County tabulates the last remaining votes. Her opponent, Brad Stollberg, has received 92 votes.

Meanwhile, the races for mayor and city council in West University Place remain so tight that it’s too close to call heading into the late hours of May 1.

In the mayoral race, Susan Sample maintains a thin 30-vote lead over opponent Kevin Trautner. Amongst the nine candidates running for one of four positions on the city council, John Montgomery remains in first with 1,247 votes. Melanie Bell follows with 1,125 votes.

Four candidates are within 44 votes of one another as they vye for the remaining two seats. Incumbent John Barnes leads that group with 1,041 votes, followed closely by Shannon Carroll at 1,026 votes, Sam Parikh at 1,024 votes, and incumbent Lauri Lankford at 997 votes.

With 22 of 102 voting centers reporting, Susan Sample maintains a razor-thin lead in the West University Place mayoral race against opponent Kevin Trautner, while John Montgomery, Melanie Bell, John Barnes, and Sam Parikh are ahead in the race for one of four available City Council positions.

Meanwhile, Andy Chan retains his commanding lead in the Southside Place mayoral race against opponent Savvas Stefanides with Jennifer Anderson leading the race for City Council Position 3 against opponent Brad Stollberg.


Sample leads by only 29 votes, with 1,280 votes compared to Trautner’s 1,251 votes. Among the candidates for a position on the West University Place city council, Montgomery has slightly pulled ahead with 1,238 votes, 124 votes more than the second-highest vote getter, Bell, at 1,114 votes. The next four highest vote getters remain within 50 votes of one another as they vye for the remaining two council positions.

Meanwhile, two candidates each are running for the Southside Place mayoral race and the race for council Position 3, respectively.

The results for the races for Southside Place mayor and Southside Place City Council Position 3 remain unchanged. Chan leads opponent Stefanides with 145 votes to 20 votes, while in the race for Southside Place City Council Position 3, Anderson leads Stollberg 122 votes to 34 votes.

Early-voting results from Harris County show Susan Sample in the lead for the West University Place mayoral race against opponent Kevin Trautner with John Montgomery, Melanie Bell, Shannon Carroll and John Barnes ahead in the race for one of four available City Council positions.

Meanwhile, Andy Chan has taken an early commanding lead in the Southside Place mayoral race against opponent Savvas Stefanides with Jennifer Anderson leading the race for City Council Position 3 against opponent Brad Stollberg.

Sample leads by a narrow margin with 1,208 votes compared to Trautner’s 1,148 votes. Among the candidates for a position on the West University Place city council, the current top four vote getters remain within approximately 200 votes of one another.

Meanwhile, two candidates each are running for the Southside Place mayoral race and the race for council Position 3, respectively.

In the race for Southside Place mayor, Chan leads opponent Stefanides with 145 votes to 20 votes, while in the race for Southside Place City Council Position 3, Anderson leads Stollberg 122 votes to 34 votes.

West University Place voters could vote for no more than one candidate for mayor and for no more than four candidates for council member. The mayor will be selected based on who receives the greatest number of votes. For the City Council, the top four vote-getters will be elected as council members. The city will not hold a runoff election.

According to the West University Place city charter, no person can serve as mayor or council member for more than three two-year successive terms.
