“Initially, it was a frozen yogurt franchise,” Julian said. “But the pandemic hit, so we weren’t comfortable with a self-serve model. So we decided to just create our own concept and flipped from froyo to ice cream.”
Julian said during COVID-19 lockdowns that Camille was making ice cream in the couple’s home kitchen. This led to the two jointly writing a business plan to bring their ice cream shop dream to life.
“Being able to determine how the business operates and being able to create the culture for the business is something that I think we both really enjoy,” Julian said.
The first Cosmic Ice Cream Co. location, formerly known as Scoop, is at 937 W. Bay Area Blvd., Webster, and opened February 2021. Camille said a second location will open in January in Spring Branch at 8207 Long Point Road, Ste. A.
Pints of Cosmic ice cream can be purchased at SpindleTap Brewery & Coffee Co. and Craft Beer Cellar in Houston as well as Cupcake Cachet in League City.
Julian said he and Camille are interested in brewery culture and sought to have that interest influence their shop, such as by offering flights of ice cream for customers to sample and cold brew coffee. He said offering cold brew is an important part of the business as it differentiates Cosmic from other ice cream shops.
In addition to cold brew and scoops of ice cream, Camille said Cosmic offers milkshakes, ice cream cereal bars with various cereals and ice cream nachos on waffle chips.
Looking toward the future, Julian and Camille said they plan to eventually expand their retail presence going into 2023.
“I think we’re in a good spot,” Julian said. “Things are starting to feel like they’re flowing pretty smoothly right now. Knock on wood.”
