Musical performances, art show: 7 things to do in Sugar Land and Missouri City this weekend, Dec. 8-10

This weekend brings many opportunities for rest and relaxation, including events suitable for friends and family, date night, or big groups.


Holiday Lights
Families can stroll through the lights show, enjoying brilliant holiday displays that feature 2.5 million lights throughout the ballpark. Attendees will also find carnival games, children’s activities and food trucks outside the ballpark. This annual event takes place through Jan. 1. 6 p.m. $12-14. The Sound of Music
Inspiration Stage presents an adapted version of The Sound of Music, featuring the high-spirited Maria as she serves as a governess for the seven children of a naval captain during pre-World War II Austria. The musical includes beloved classics such as “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 3:30 p.m. $12-$25. Electronic Recycling Event
Residents may bring electronic recyclables to the Missouri City Public Safety Headquarters for disposal. A complete list of acceptable and non-acceptable items may be found online at the city’s official website. No disposal fee required. 8 a.m.-noon. Public Safety Headquarters, 3849 Cartwright Rd., Missouri City.


Holiday Open Studio
The Sugar Land Art Center & Gallery hosts an open studio event, during which guests can meet local artists, view live demos and purchase artwork while enjoying refreshments. 3-7 p.m. Sugar Land Art Center & Gallery, 104 Industrial Blvd., Ste. Q, Sugar Land. 281-565-0957.


Winter Blast
The First Colony Community Services Association hosts a winter celebration free and open to the public. Thousands of pounds shaved ice or “snow” will be blown for families to enjoy. Residents may purchase food and participate in fun activities, including sledding, face painting, and rock climbing. A life-sized snow globe will also be available for photo opportunities. ‘Twas the Elf Before Christmas
The Houston Tidelanders Chorus, an all-male acapella group, performs at holiday favorites at the Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, featuring guest chorus Space City Sound. 2 p.m. $10-$15. Fishers of Men Lutheran Church, 2011 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land.


The Nutcracker
The Houston Ballet presents a performance of The Nutcracker at the Smart Financial Centre. This classic fairy tale features music, costumes and beloved characters such as Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince. 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. $60 and up. As more cities embrace public art as a way to reflect history and culture, Missouri City approved creating a formal Art in Public Places Program in May. The initiative aims to beautify the city and enhance residents’ quality of life, officials said.
