Humble ISD set March 19 as a return date for Kingwood High School.

The Humble ISD board of trustees convened Oct. 10 to approve agenda items including this year's tax rate. Officials also gave updates on Kingwood High School and Humble Middle School.

Kingwood High School update
HISD is conducting environmental tests this week to determine if Kingwood High School has completely dried out, been sanitized and if the air quality is stable after flood damage from Hurricane Harvey.

Once the environmental tests have been completed, the district can begin the reconstruction work on the inside of the building, including dry wall installation, new flooring, ceiling tile replacement and paint. Work could also feature the replacement of air conditioning, cafeteria appliances and plumbing and electrical systems, officials said.

The damage to KHS could total $40 million. The district will cover damages from Harvey through a $28 million insurance payment in addition to funding from FEMA and the state of Texas, trustee Robert Sitton said.

District approves tax rate
HISD's 2017 tax rate will remain at $1.52 per $100 valuation.

The rate includes $1.17 per $100 valuation for maintenance and operations—the highest allowed by the state—and 35 cents per $100 valuation for debt service.

New roof for Humble Middle School
HISD approved a proposal to provide a new roof for Humble Middle School. The project is not related to damage from Hurricane Harvey, Sitton said.
