Here is an update on transportation projects and initiatives around the Heights, River Oaks and Montrose area.


Safer Streets Initiative
The Safer Streets Initiative has been underway since 2017. Road safety audits conducted by city and federal officials in 2018 identified priority projects throughout the city with both short- and long-term opportunities identified, including several intersections in the Heights, River Oaks and Montrose area. All of the short-term projects are using operating funds and will be completed by the end of the year. Other long-term projects will need to be added to the Capital Improvement Program, city officials said.

No. 1: Taylor Street at Spring Street
Short-term improvements include improved signal timing and driveway crossings; long-term improvements include rebuilding the MKT trailhead at the intersection.





No. 2: Hawthorne, Holman and Smith streets
Short-term improvements include signal maintenance, updated signage and improved lighting; long-term projects would add pedestrian and bike connections.





No. 3: Allen Parkway at Shepherd Drive
Short term, the audit recommended the bridge be closed to pedestrians, but it will remain open; long-term, the signals should be replaced, curbs modified and pedestrian guard rails improved.





Dunlavy Street paving and drainage
Phase 1 of the Dunlavy Street project is underway with installation of concrete drainage boxes.

A: The project spans from West Main Street to Richmond Avenue and will improve the road surface with concrete and install new curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

B: Another project, still in the design phase, will provide similar updates from Peden Street to West Dallas Street with construction scheduled for summer 2020.
