  1. Houston-area school districts excused from having to make up missed days from Hurricane Harvey with TEA waivers


Commissioner of Education, Mike Morath, has given permission to all school districts and charter schools that fall within Gov. Greg Abbott’s disaster proclamation for Hurricane Harvey to apply for missed school day waivers for all scheduled instructional days missed, according to a press release from the Texas Education Agency.

Construction on Big Rivers—the water park planned at the Grand Texas Theme Park—will begin in August, Grand Texas CEO Monty Galland said. Construction on the water park at Grand Texas, which is located near the intersection of Hwy. 59 and Hwy. 242 just north of Kingwood, could be completed as early as spring 2018, he said.

  1. Without state action, health insurance fund for teachers could shut down


If the Texas Legislature declines to take action this session, the Teacher Retirement System of Texas may have to shut down the TRS Care Trust Fund, which provides medical care to about a quarter of a million retired teachers in the state. In the previous legislative session, the TRS Care Trust Fund faced a shortfall, and the Legislature allocated roughly $768 million to fill in the missing funds. Over the past two years, the situation has only worsened. TRS is requesting an additional $1.35 billion this time around, according to a Legislative Budget Board report.

  1. Harris County plans 600,000-acre aerial mosquito spray for Thursday, Sept. 14


Harris County Public Health, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the U.S. Air Force Reserve will begin an aerial spray for mosquitos Thursday evening throughout Harris County, according to a statement from HCPH. The agencies are working to limit the growth of mosquito populations after flooding from Hurricane Harvey.
