See fireworks in Castle Hills

Celebrate the holiday at the annual Castle Hills 4th of July Freedom Festival. The event features live music, food trucks, bounce houses, face painting and a fireworks display. 5:30 p.m. (fireworks start at dusk). Free.

Bret Michaels headlines

Independence Fest in Flower Mound starts with a children’s parade and ends with fireworks around 9:50 p.m. Activities include a vintage car show, food and drinks and a free kid zone. The festival is headlined by Bret Michaels and includes a performance by Le Freak. 5 p.m. Free.

Lewisville hosts Selena tribute

Bidi Bidi Banda returns to the Sounds of Lewisville concert series with a tribute to Selena. The Lewisville Parks & Recreation Teddy Bear Picnic takes place during this concert. Enjoy the concert with your favorite teddy bear and bring a new one to donate. PediPlace will distribute donated bears to children of low-income families. 7 p.m. Free.

Test sci-fi knowledge at library trivia night

The library hosts a sci-fi themed trivia night. Questions cover a variety of sci-fi books, movies and television shows all ranging in different levels of difficulty for all ages. Participants may form teams of up to four members and no registration is required. 7 p.m. Free.

Make a soy candle

The candle making workshop is led by local artisan candle maker Lisa Collin. She leads the class through the creation of an 8-ounce, 100% soy candle in a glass jar. Scents are available to add. Guests will also learn how to choose candles that are healthier. She also has tips on making candles last longer. 2 p.m. $35.

Adopt a pet at EarthWise

Join the nonprofit Animal Rescue Foundation of Texas at EarthWise Pet Supply’s July adoption event. The group’s goal is to rescue pets from shelters and find homes for them. Puppies and kittens will be available for adoption. EarthWise will have free pet treat samples available. Guests can also meet Sandy the Sloth. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Free admission.

Learn how to enhance your neighborhood

The workshop teaches residents about the Love Your Block and Neighborhood Enhancement Program. Through the program residents can brainstorm ideas with city staff and neighbors on how to do such things as add park benches or have a party in their neighborhood. 6:30 p.m. Free.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful, the city of Lewisville and AgriLife Water University partner for this garden class. Learn about native and adapted plants that thrive in shadier spots along with tips and tricks to create beautiful shade gardens that beat the Texas heat. The class also covers gardening under mature trees as well as turf alternatives and hardscape options for low-light areas. 6 p.m. Free.

Enjoy a balloon show at Flower Mound library

Rob Holladay the Magical Balloon Guy visits the library to entertain children ages 4 and older. Seating is limited, and tickets are required for admission. Tickets are issued first-come, first-served at the Youth Services Desk beginning at 9 a.m. on show day. A valid Flower Mound Public Library card must be presented to receive tickets. 2 p.m. Free.

Enjoy a Garth Brooks tribute in the plaza
