Embrace the holiday season by decorating gingerbread houses to support Habitat for Humanity or enjoy breakfast with Santa Claus. Here are some events taking place in McKinney this weekend.

1. More than 150 people perform The Nutcracker
The Dallas Repertoire Ballet and students from Allen-based Academy of Dance Arts will perform “The Nutcracker” with a cast of more than 150 people. A sensory-friendly performance designed for children with sensory processing disorders will also take place Dec. 9. 7:30 p.m. (Dec. 8-9), 2 p.m. (Dec. 9-10). $22-$52 (depending on seat). 2. McKinney Community Center hosts book fair
A variety of books and other gifts are on sale at the Scholastic Book Fair. This event is free and open to the public. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Free (attendance). McKinney Community Center, 2001 S. Central Expressway. 972-547-2690.

3. Battle friends in a video game tournament
Attendees can battle each other in “Super Smash Bros.,” “Mario Kart” and other video games. Attendees can bring their own Wii controller. 4:30-5:30 p.m. Free. John and Judy Gay Library, 6861 Eldorado Parkway. 972-547-7323.


4. Breakfast with Santa Claus
Love Life Foundation invites residents to enjoy a free breakfast with Santa. Attendees can also pick up Angel Tree Angels to help children in need in Collin County. 8:30-10:30 a.m. The Sanctuary Music & Events, 6633 Virginia Parkway. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

5. Medical City McKinney hosts hernia seminar
The free hernia seminar includes information presented by general surgeon David Lambert. 10 a.m.-noon. Medical City McKinney, 4500 Medical Center Drive. Registration is available online at or by calling 1-855-296-6265.

6. Adorn gingerbread houses for Habitat for Humanity
Funds from the 8th annual Gingerbread for Humanity event will benefit the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity. Attendees can purchase a gingerbread house kit, which includes an assembled house, candy and frosting, or guests can attend the event and have access to a candy buffet and unlimited frosting. Mrs. Claus will be available for photos. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. $30. Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5871 Virginia Parkway.

7. Pet photos with the Grinch
Hollywood Feed is offering customers a chance to have pet photos taken with the Grinch. Pictures are $15 each and all proceeds go to the Crossed Paws Animal Haven, a non-profit dog rescue. Noon-4 p.m. Hollywood Feed, 2851 Craig Drive, Ste. 200D.

8. Rotary Club hosts 18th annual Parade of Lights
The Parade of Lights includes a parade with approximately 70 floats, McKinney ISD drill teams and bands, antique fire trucks and Santa Claus. 5:30 p.m. (participants arrive, parade line up), 6:30 p.m. (parade begins). Downtown McKinney.
