As 2019 begins, here are several updates from Georgetown ISD as well as local private schools and universities.
1. Mitchell Elementary School
Volunteers from Trend Micro—a cybersecurity tech company—helped clean the elementary school grounds Oct. 30. The volunteers expanded the school garden, installed mulch beds and painted parking lot bumpers, the district said. The school is located at 1601 Rockride Lane, Georgetown.
2. Wagner Middle School
GISD’s newest school, Wagner Middle School, was given a citation of excellence in the Learning By Design Magazine fall 2018 edition, which highlights school architecture across the country. The school, located at 1621 Rockride Lane, Georgetown, opened in November 2017.
3. Community Montessori School
The private school, 500 Pleasant Valley Drive, Georgetown, continues to expand with plans to construct a new building and renovate others in 2019. The school added a Children’s House class for students 2.5-6 years old and the Casita classroom for students 1-3 years old in 2017 and 2018.
4. Gateway College Preparatory School
Gateway, 3360 Westinghouse Road, Georgetown, is adding a permanent building to transition students from portable classrooms as well as add science labs and collaborative learning, performing arts and athletic spaces. Renovations and additions will be completed in spring 2019.
5. Southwestern University
The university received a $15 million donation in February from Jack Garey, a retired lawyer and businessman who is a life trustee at Southwestern, to establish the Jack and Camille Garey School of Natural Sciences.
The second phase of the $37 million expansion of the Fondren-Jones Science Center, 1001 E. University Ave., Georgetown, is expected to finish this fall. The project added 20,000 square feet of new space that will include the Whitmore Mathematics and Computer Science Laboratory, the Kinesiology Human Performance Laboratory, a premedical education center and a plant-growing facility.
6. Celebration Church
Celebration Church, located at 601 Westinghouse Road, Georgetown, began offering academic programs in fall 2018 through Southeastern University, a private Christian liberal arts university based in Florida. The school offers a variety of associate, bachelor’s and master’s programs for students.
