Two brothers, company President Ian Maclean and Vice President Jason Maclean, started Highland Landscaping in 2002.

“We had an old truck and went around doing little landscape jobs,” Ian said. “We raked leaves and dug holes and trenches and planted trees. We did all the work for the first few years until we started hiring employees.”

Ian said Highland Landscaping’s focus is landscape construction and commercial maintenance.

“We put on our business caps and think, ‘If I am the business owner of this future building, what maintenance cost am I signing up for with this maintenance plan? Is this look congruent with the look of the building and the culture and the spirit of the business in the building, or does it clash with the culture of the business?’” Ian said. “What people see when they are walking by your business, or what employees see when they are walking in and out, does it send the right message?”

Ian said Highland Landscaping builds and installs landscapes and also works with clients to provide low-maintenance and low-cost plans.

“As a business owner, your focus is probably on your customer experience, your bottom line,” Ian said. “The cost of maintaining landscape and paying high water bills is totally avoidable.”

Ian said that using native species, leading irrigation technology and plant selection are key components in setting up a successful landscape.

Highland Landscaping does most of its work in Southlake, Keller, Grapevine, Colleyville, Westlake, Trophy Club and Roanoke. Ian said that some of the more prominent buildings in Southlake the company has landscaped include the Hilton, Granite Building, Del Frisco’s in Southlake Town Square, White Chapel United Methodist Church, Brian Stebbins Memorial Park and several others.

“I think one of the things that shines through with us, bigger than landscaping, is the way that we get involved in the community, and that shows up in supporting charities. It shows up in supporting organizations. It shows up in how we get engaged in supporting the local chamber of commerce,” Ian said. “Whether it’s financial, services, manpower, expertise or whatever, we can provide.”
