"What you'll notice if you are familiar with the current calendar is that there are minimal changes to the calendar," said Bryan Hallmark, GISD assistant superintendent of Operations and School Leadership.
GISD families can expect the 2019-20 school year to begin Aug. 15 and end May 28. The calendar also sets spring break for March 16-20 to align with The University of Texas. Hallmark said this is a change from last year after receiving feedback from community members to move the weeklong break from the second week of the month to the third week.
Hallmark also noted that fall break will coincide with Columbus Day to accommodate parents who also have the holiday off. He added that state testing dates have changed from the previous year to the week before Easter, forcing the calendar to have the Friday and Monday around the holiday off.

- The board approved the creation of a cosmetology program. The four-year program will be housed at East View High School but will service all students, said Malinda Golden, GISD assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. A post-high school cosmetology certification can cost between $5,000-$10,000, Golden said. By providing the program, students will have the opportunity to be certified upon graduation and be ready to enter the field immediately. Golden added that the program will require three classroom renovations and equipment at a cost of $336,000. The first certified cohort would graduate in 2022.
- The GISD school climate surveys were released Feb. 19. Parents, teachers and staff can go to the Georgetown ISD website at www.georgetownisd.org/climatesurvey and complete one or multiple surveys, which are broken down by school. The survey is open until March 8 and takes about 10 minutes to complete. GISD Executive Director of Communications Melinda Brasher said school principals will take feedback from the surveys to workshop campus plans and curriculum changes.
- Jerod Fikac was named the new head coach of East View football. Fikac was previously the coach at San Saba High School where he led the football team to a 14-1 record and an appearance in the state semifinals, the first in the school’s history, according to a news release. San Saba is about 65 miles west of Killeen, Texas.
