Around 1 mile of the Hoblitzelle Park Trail will be replaced with a new, wider pathway, according to a release from the Plano Parks and Recreation Department.

The March 24 release stated some of the trail is in poor condition and will be replaced with a 12-foot-wide, shared-use path. The new trail will also be upgraded to more effectively direct stormwater into Russell Creek, according to the department.

City planning documents show the project will cost around $1.3 million. The project is being paid for though the city's Community Investment Program Fund. Construction is set to start this spring and conclude in the fall, the release stated. Sections of the trail will be closed during construction hours, which are scheduled for 7 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. The department is asking students who use the trail to walk to school to use the sidewalks off Georgetown Drive and Red River Drive instead.

The Hoblitzelle Park Trail runs along Russell Creek and includes more than 3 miles of pathway, according to the city’s website. Hoblitzelle Park includes a picnic pavilion, three playgrounds and restrooms.

Parks department officials said staff will plant 15 trees around Hoblitzelle Park this April to offset tree removal taking place because of the project.
