If officials get their way, the city of Plano could move to install a public park near the burgeoning Legacy West development.

Plano City Council on Monday approved the terms of a contract to purchase a grassy, 7-acre site for $9.9 million. The site is located across the street from some of the city's most prominent construction projects. The land purchase is currently unfunded, and would only go through if voters pass a $78.9 million bond package for parks projects in the May 6 elections.

"The park in Legacy West will be a neighborhood park to serve the growing number of residents in the area," City Parks Director Robin Reeves wrote in an email. "It will likely be more urban in character than a typical neighborhood park."

The proposed park site is located northwest of Legacy Drive and Communications Parkway, across the street from a series of soon-to-open apartment buildings at Legacy West.

If voters approve the funding, the land purchase for the Legacy West park would represent more than half of the $18 million set aside in the bond proposal for park-related land acquisitions.

City staff members will meet with area residents as they design and plan the proposed park, Reeves said.

The land purchase—if it goes through—would leave about $8 million in bond funds for other park-related acquisitions throughout the city. Reeves said the city is eyeing "several possible locations" for these purchases, depending on availability of land. These projects could pave the way for green belt extensions and new parks in underserved areas of the city, Reeves said.
