In a tight race for Southlake City Council, incumbent Carolyn Morris squeezed past challenger Greg Standerfer, beating him Saturday by only 153 votes.

According to unofficial total results from Tarrant and Denton County, Morris received about 53 percent of the vote with 1,495 supporters against Standerfer's 1,342, which amounted to about 47 percent of the vote.

Morris is a licensed real estate broker, a former small business owner and a former school administrator and principal in the HEB Independent School District.

Morris thanked voters for re-electing her to City Council.

"I was very disappointed with the extremely negative and slanderous campaign my opponent ran during this election," Morris said in a statement. "The residents of Southlake deserve better. I hope Southlake is able to get beyond the negative campaign and we can reunite the citizens of our great city."

Standerfer, who works as an attorney, has previously served on the Council.

"I congratulate Carolyn on her win," said Standerfer on Sunday from Oklahoma. "And I think it is a sad thing that in a city like Southlake, only getting 8 percent of the registered voters to vote for you wins an election. That is not a negative on Carolyn. It is sad that we don't have a greater particpation from our voters."

Of the 18,026 registered voters in Southlake, about 16 percent of voters or 2,822 ballots were counted for the City Council Place 2 race.

Incumbent Mayor John Terrell ran unopposed in this year's election and will serve a second three-year term as mayor.
