Next school year, more than 100 students who attend Silver Lake Elementary School will be transferred to Dove Elementary and Cannon Elementary schools.

The Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District board of trustees on Monday night approved a plan to change attendance zones for the three schools as a move to address overcrowding at Silver Lake Elementary School.

Superintendent Robin Ryan said in a statement that the adjustment in attendance zones is the most feasible option to prepare for future student enrollment growth at the school.

"We realize this decision affects families at a personal level and our staff really has worked to consider all the impacts in developing this plan while still addressing the capacity concerns at Silver Lake," Ryan said. "As we move forward, the principals, teachers and teams at each of these three schools will continue working with families to create a smooth and positive transition for students."

According to GCISD, enrollment at Silver Lakes Elementary School has already reached capacity and is expected to grow by an additional 67 students.

Under the plan approved by trustees, about 100 Silver Lake students will be attending Dove, while another 18 to 20 students will move to Cannon when school begins on Aug. 27. Enrollment at Silver Lake is expected to drop to about 630 students under the proposed changes. The plan does not affect high school or middle school attendance zones.

In making the decision to adjust attendance zones, GCISD trustees considered a variety of data and factors, including building capacities, campus enrollment trends and projections, bus transportation and parent feedback. A recent demographic report revealed a growing student population at Silver Lake in the past five years.

GCISD spokeswoman Megan Overman said the plan will provide short- and long-term relief to overcrowding.

"We have been hearing from parents about the crowding concerns at Silver Lake and we have also been monitoring those numbers," she said. "When the demographers report was presented in February, it became very evident that we needed to do something for the coming school year."

Overman said no other zone changes are planned for the upcoming school year.

Cannon Elementary will host a welcoming event on May 15 for new students at 1300 W. College St. Dove Elementary will host its event on May 17 at 1932 Dove Road.
