Phase 2 of construction at Bonnie Wenk Park has begun and will include two multipurpose sports fields, two playgrounds and two additional parking lots, according to a news release from the city of McKinney.

"We designed Bonnie Wenk Park to offer something for everyone," Director of Parks and Recreation Michael Kowski said in the release. "By adding these new amenities we hope that visitors will find something new and unexpected to explore and enjoy each time they visit this beautiful community asset."

Phase 2 of the 170-acre park, located at 2996 Virginia Parkway, will also include new concrete hike and bike trails, restrooms, and benches at each playground and along new and existing trails. This phase is expected to be complete in May, according to the release.

One of the two new playgrounds in Phase 2 will be an all-abilities playground designed for children of all ages, abilities and needs. This playground is a joint effort between the city and the Rotary clubs of McKinney. Officials broke ground on the all-abilities playground April 20.

Some trails near the dog park will temporarily close at various times during the project, according to the release.

Phase 1 of the project covered 20 acres of the park and was completed in 2013. The phase included a dog park, two concrete hike and bike trails, on-site parking, restrooms, an amphitheater, a lake, and connection to the hike and bike trail system along Wilson Creek.
