A runoff election occurs when no candidate in a race receives more than 50 percent of the vote. The top two vote-getters in each race advance to a runoff election May 22.

After the March 6 primary election, McKinney residents will see two Democratic runoff races.

In the race for U.S. representative District 3, Democratic candidates Lori Burch and Sam Johnson will face each other in a runoff. In the race for the District 12 seat on the State Board of Education, Democratic candidates Laura Malone-Miller and Suzanne Smith face each other in the runoff election. Residents who did not vote in the March 6 primary election can still vote in the May 22 primary runoff election. Residents who voted in the March 6 primary election must vote with the same party in the May 22 runoff election.

Early voting for the May 22 primary runoff election runs from May 14-18. The last day to register to vote in that election is April 23.
