In March, McKinney residents will vote in the primary election to determine the Democratic and Republican parties for governor and county judge among other statewide, county and district seats.

Many nearby cities will also have school district and city council elections in May. However, McKinney voters will not have an election in May because no McKinney ISD board seats or McKinney City Council seats are up for election.

McKinney City Council members and MISD board members serve four-year terms, which results in a local election held every two years.

The next council election will be held in May 2019 with council seats for districts 2 and 4 and an at-large seat up for election as well as MISD board places 4, 5 and 6 up for election.

While no special election is expected this year, the city or school board has the option to call for a special election during an off year for an issue such as a bond election.
