After three public hearings, modified development agreements and various letters and emails, McKinney City Council unanimously voted to “discontinue and terminate” the proposed annexation process at Tuesday's council meeting.

The city proposed to annex several properties prior to Dec. 1 totaling approximately 5.9 square miles of land in the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction—or land outside the city limits that it is legally allowed to incorporate.

However, after public hearings and discussion with residents and landowners, City Council chose to discontinue and terminate discussions about annexation. This also means any development agreements signed are no longer valid, McKinney Mayor George Fuller said.

During a Nov. 6 City Council work session, Fuller said he would not support any annexation until landowners and the city come to an agreement.

Many public speakers during tonight's meeting asked Council and city staff to continue working on development agreements with landowners. This is something Fuller said would take place after more public discussions and possible town hall meetings are held.

Fuller posted a statement to his Facebook page Nov. 3 related to his reason for voting to discontinue discussions about the proposed annexation.

City Council was expected to vote on the proposed annexation Nov. 15, but after tonight’s vote, the discussion will be discontinued.
