A proposition on November's $160.3 million bond election has been receiving attention lately and according to Council Member Don Day, some of that confusion can easily be clarified.

During the Sept. 15 city council meeting McKinney resident Jennifer Druckzmiller encouraged residents to vote 'no' on Prop. 5, which would allow the city to issue bonds to construct a $13 million, four story, 400-plus parking space parking garage downtown. Druckzmiller said the parking garage location—near Church Street between Louisiana and Virginia streets—is a poor choice.

"The illustration that we have been shown includes a fake historic facade that does not adequately reflect what draws people to our city," she said. "This will be the first thing that greets people as they drive into our beautiful historic downtown area. That is why I am encouraging all I meet to vote 'no' on Prop. 5. It is not the location that we need it, even though we do need a parking garage to address our growth."

During the council comment portion of the meeting, Day voiced concern over the amount of comments he had been hearing regarding the parking garage. As a business owner and resident in downtown McKinney for 20 years, he said, the parking garage is dear to his heart.

Day said the city held four open meetings, discussed three different sites and decided the proposed location was the best option for the garage.

"What people need to understand is that a vote 'no' for the parking garage means there will be no parking garage," he said. "Bond elections only happen every four or five years so it wouldn't come up again for another four to five years and there is no way to know whether it would be back on the ballot. So if we get a 'no' vote on the parking garage, there will be no parking garage for the foreseeable future."

Day said residents needed to understand that Prop. 5 does not include a vote on the location. Prop. 5 only addresses whether the city will get the funding needed to build a parking garage in downtown.

Information on the parking garage can be found on the city's website.
