On Tuesday night, Highland Village City Council heard an annual report regarding the police department's compliance with prohibiting racial profiling.

Since 2001, the state has required local police departments to report certain information regarding racial profiling relating to motor vehicle stops in which a citation is issued and to arrests made as a result of these stops. This law requires each law enforcement agency in the state to adopt a written policy on racial profiling and prohibit its practice as well.

In 2017 the police department had a total of 922 traffic stops. Of those stops, 888 citations were issued, 10 arrests were made, and 24 stops led to both arrests and citations.

The annual report showed 691 of the individuals who were stopped are Caucasian, 114 are Hispanic and 76 are African-American.

The report also showed that of those 922 stops, police officers reported that the race of the driver was not known prior to the car being pulled over in 806 of those stops.
