Lewisville ISD announced the approximately 625 students slated to attend Mill Street Elementary School should plan to meet their teachers Aug. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the new facility, though it is
still unclear whether it will be finished in time for the first day of school.
Mill Street Elementary Principal Susan Heintzman said in a written communication to parents July 25 if the school is not ready in time, LISD will send out additional communication to parents and the public with updated information regarding the location of meet-the-teacher night and where students should report on the first day of school, which is Aug. 13.
"LISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin Rogers examined the campus with the architects and construction company, and although there will be a few things that will not be completed before school starts, the goal is to have the building prepared for us to move in by the first day of school," Heintzman stated, adding that ongoing evaluations of the school are happening daily.
The LISD board of trustees learned at a July 15 meeting the school's construction was running behind due to weather delays.
Officials will know if the school will be ready in time following a city inspection Aug. 9. If the school passes the inspection, it will receive a certificate of occupancy, and teachers will get a chance to set up their classrooms and host meet-the-teacher night the weekend before school starts.
District staff have been working on contingency plans since early June when they first learned from contractors the facility may not be completed on schedule, though those plans have not been made public. However, Rogers noted at the July 15 board meeting Mill Street Elementary's inaugural class already belongs to existing schools and would likely revert back to them if the school is not ready in time.
