He will face Democratic candidate and attorney Diana Weitzel in the November election.
Denton County elections administrator Frank Phillips said the county's primary runoff ran “really smoothly.” Once all votes are counted, Phillips said he predicts Denton County will have around a 7% turnout.
“For a primary runoff, that’s pretty good,” he said. "The last time we had one of this nature, the overall turnout was about 2.8%. Normally we’re in the 3% range.”
Mail-in ballots received July 14 were counted among early voting totals, Phillips said.
“The only thing that could still possibly come in is some overseas mail-in ballots that have a few more days to come in, but those will be minimal,” he said.
In other primary runoff races, Brian Walker won over Elizabeth Beach for Justice of the 2nd Court of Appeals, Place 7. He is expected to take the bench with no challenger in the November election.
Mary "MJ" Hegar won over Royce West for the Democratic Party nomination for U.S. Senate. She will face Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn in November.
In the statewide race for railroad commissioner, Chrysta Castaneda finished ahead of challenger Roberto R. "Beto" Alonzo and will face Republican candidate James Wright in November.
Candace Valenzuela won against Kim Olson in the race for U.S. State Representative of District 24. In November, she will face Republican candidate Beth Van Duyne and Libertarian candidate Darren Hamilton.
