After a series of construction delays earlier this year, Mill Street Elementary opened Oct. 15.

Lewisville ISD officials, community leaders, school board members and students rolled out a red carpet to welcome students to their first day of school at the new school. The Lewisville High School drill team and band also helped welcome the students, playing music and cheering students on as they walked through the school doors for the first time.

LISD officials announced in August that Mill Street Elementary, which was set to open Aug. 13 for the first day of school, would not be ready for students until fall.

While construction on the school continued, 251 kindergarten, first- and second-grade Mill Street Elementary students spent the first nine weeks of the school year at College Street Elementary, according to LISD Chief Communication Officer Amanda Brim. An additional 311 prekindergarten, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade Mill Street students did the same at Central Elementary.

Some renovation and construction projects that were set to begin earlier this year at College Street Elementary and Central Elementary were delayed so that the district could accommodate Mill Street Elementary students until the school opened. Now that the new school is open, the district will be able to move forward with those plans.

An official ribbon-cutting for Mill Street Elementary is set to take place soon, though the official details have yet to be determined.
