McKinney ISD board of trustees approved a resolution to become a District of Innovation during a meeting on Nov. 14. DOI status would give the district more local control and increased freedom and flexibility, according to district documents. A DOI is a Texas Education Agency-sanctioned designation for public school districts that exempts districts from certain state education laws. Examples of DOI exemptions include being able to choose to hire industry professionals to teach certain subjects, raising class-size maximums, lowering mandatory attendance rates and using unique instruction methods. The district will hold a public hearing Dec. 19 to consider whether the district should develop a local innovation plan, which is required for a district seeking a DOI designation. If the board decides to move forward, they will appoint a committee to develop the plan. The board would likely vote on the plan in February.
