Every year the Texas Association of School Boards and the Texas Association of School Administrators conduct an annual survey of superintendent pay and benefits in Texas public schools.

TASB sent the superintendent survey questionnaire to 1,023 Texas public school districts and 750 districts responded for the 2016-17 school year, or 73 percent of districts in Texas.

According to TASB, the average superintendent salary for 2016-17 was $142,154, a 1.9 percent increase from 2015-16. Based on the survey data, superintendent salaries range from an average salary of $94,920 in districts with fewer than 500 students to an average salary of $308,184 in districts with more than 50,000 students.

Frisco ISD's newly named next superintendent, Mike Waldrip, will make a base salary of $293,000, which is below the average superintendent salary for a Texas school district with more than 50,000 students, according to TASB data. Superintendent Jeremy Lyon earned a base salary of $290,000 for the 2016-17 school year.
