No J.C. Penney Co. locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be closing, according to a list of store closures the company released today.

The stores were spared from the chopping block after Plano-based JCPenney announced in February that 130 to 140 stores and two distribution centers would close as the increasingly online-retail-focused company aims to invest capital in fewer storefronts.

Out of the nearly 140 store closures, nine are in Texas. Most of the affected stores will begin the liquidation process April 17.

According to JCPenney, approximately 5,000 positions nationwide will be affected by the closures, most of which will occur in June. The company will provide outplacement support services for eligible associates and will be looking at relocating some upper-level employees.

The company has three store locations in Collin County:

  • Stonebriar Centre, 2607 Preston Road, Frisco

  • Collin Creek Mall, 821 N. Central Expressway, Plano

  • The Village at Fairview, 301 E. Stacy Road, Fairview
