City voters decisively favored a ballot measure that could lead to restaurants and bars being allowed to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. The proposition passed 58.92 percent to 41.08 percent in Collin County and 60.55 percent to 39.45 percent in Denton County. A total of 26,108 residents went to the polls, more than tripling the approximately 7,000 residents who voted on the same issue in 2006. "All the credit goes to the Frisco voters," said Chris Moss, a spokesman for the Frisco 2 a.m. PAC, which formed in support of late-night alcohol sales. "They obviously recognize the economic impact and that this will put [Frisco restaurants and bars] on a level playing field with surrounding cities." Now that the proposition has passed, Frisco City Council is allowed to reconsider instituting late-night alcohol sales at a future City Council meeting. Moss said he is hopeful the issue will be on the next Frisco City Council agenda and "hopefully we will be celebrating later hours very soon." If the council passes the ordinance, businesses will have to apply for a permit to be able to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. Currently restaurants and bars can serve alcohol until midnight every night except Saturday, when they can serve until 1 a.m.

Next steps:

  • Frisco City Council members can decide whether to allow late-night alcohol sales.
  • If approved by the council, businesses are required to apply for a late-night permit.
  • If denied by the council, alcohol serving hours would stay the same.
