Editor's note: This article has been updated with a new photo from Holy Family School. Elinor William's title has also been changed. Williams is the coordinator of the evening program at Holy Family.

Elinor Williams moved to McKinney 10 years ago. When looking for a job, the mother of four found childcare options were limited and typically did not extend into the evenings.

Williams is now the coordinator of a new evening program at Holy Family School, a nonprofit serving the community since 1951. She said starting the evening program was personal for her.

Holy Family will begin offering the evening childcare March 4 for children ages 3-9. The program will be available from 6 p.m.-midnight Monday-Friday.

“If I got a [job] interview, I didn’t have anyone to watch [my kids],” she said. “I didn’t have a whole lot of options. Even when I would apply … for the most part I would get interviews [and] get calls back saying they would hire me, but they wanted to hire me at night.”

Her previous work at the McKinney Housing Authority allowed Williams to see that the need for childcare extended beyond her own family.

“I quickly learned that accessible childcare was not readily available,” she said in a news release from the school. “… I not only could relate [with other families] but totally understood their frustrations. I had many of those same challenges.”

Evening childcare is key for those in the healthcare and service industries as well as for first responders whose hours are outside of the typical 8 a.m.-5 p.m. workday, according to the release.

Registration for the evening program begins Feb. 27. Meals and snacks will be provided during the evening program.

Holy Family is also looking to offer Saturday care from 6 a.m.-midnight. Williams said the program is expected to begin in April.

“Saturday care will begin once we have approval by the state,” Williams said in an email to Community Impact Newspaper. “Being [that Saturday care] is outside of the normal operating days and hours, we have to ensure we are in compliance.”

The school, located at 500 Throckmorton St., McKinney, opened more than 65 years ago at Holy Family Church.

Holy Family also offers weekday childcare for children ages six weeks to prekindergarten from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. More information about registration at Holy Family can be found online at www.hfsmckinney.org.
