During Tuesday’s McKinney City Council meeting, council members approved moving forward with an internship program and funding for the airport land-acquisition project.

Here are key takeaways from the meeting.

1. Internship program
Council voted unanimously to establish a Community Internship Program and authorize the city manager to enter into internship agreements with businesses in McKinney.

The internship program, which will last a maximum of 10 weeks, is expected to begin this summer. Interns will work no more than 20 hours per week and earn at least $8 an hour. The city of McKinney will also hold training events and ceremonies for interns during the program, according to city documents.

The city and McKinney ISD will be responsible for organizing the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of interns.

Council Member Tracy Rath said she hopes to see this program expand next year to include all students in McKinney, including students who are home-schooled, attend Collin College and attend Frisco ISD.

2. Funding for airport land-acquisition project
Council approved an amendment to the fiscal year 2017-18 budget and the 2018-22 Capital Improvement Program to provide funding for the McKinney National Airport land-acquisition project. According to city documents, the budget shall be amended by appropriating $22,500,000 in the Airport Construction Fund for the airport land-acquisition project.

Council authorized the city manager to enter into an agreement with VTCR LP, Prairie Flight LP and MADMT LP for the purchase of approximately 190 acres of land located at the southeast side of the airport during a Dec. 19 council meeting. The land will be purchased with cash for $22.7 million, according to the city’s website.

“Currently, the city owns 775 acres of land comprising the airport, and pursuant to the recommendations of an updated airport master plan, the city aims to add up to 500 acres in the coming years to protect the growth potential of the airport," according to the city’s website.

3. Resolution of support for development of a Federally Qualified Health Center
Council passed a resolution supporting Independent Bank in its efforts to construct a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Independent Bank is helping fundraise for the clinic, which is currently operating as Family Health Center at Virginia Parkway in McKinney.

Family Health Center at Virginia Parkway is looking for a new location on the east side of McDonald Street to expand and continue providing children’s, family medical and dental services to uninsured individuals and those  with Medicaid and Medicare. The health center also offers a sliding fee scale based on family size and income.

According to city documents, the city will consider a public-private partnership “at a suitable location to serve as a catalyst for redevelopment.” Terms of the public-private partnership will be brought to council for approval at a later date.
