Airport director, Towne Lake Park closed and 2 other things to know McKinney, Jan. 2-4

Towne Lake Park will temporarily be closed this week and next week, McKinney City Council will discuss support for low-income housing tax credits and the McKinney libraries will host Winterfest.

1. Towne Lake Park temporarily closed
Towne Lake Park will be closed Jan. 2-15 as the city of McKinney is in the process of replacing aging playground equipment. This is a city-wide project that will begin with Towne Lake Park. Work will be completed one playground at a time, and each playground will be closed during construction, according to the city.

2. City Council to meet Tuesday night
Council will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. at city hall, 222 N. Tennessee St., McKinney. During the meeting, council will discuss resolutions of support for nine percent low-income housing tax credits from affordable housing developers. Resolutions include Evergreen at 380, Maddox Square, The Heights, Sphinx at McKinney Ranch Senior Villas and Circle F Ranch.

3. McKinney libraries host Winterfest
Winterfest will take place Jan. 3 at John and Judy Gay Library and Jan. 4 at Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library. At this free event, attendees will make winter-themed crafts and play winter-themed games. Attendees are welcome to come and go from 10:30 a.m.-noon. John and Judy Gay Library, 6861 Eldorado Parkway, McKinney; Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library, 101 E. Hunt St., McKinney. 972-547-7323.

4. New director hired for McKinney National Airport
The city of McKinney has hired Kenneth Carley as the new director of the McKinney National Airport. Carley will begin Feb. 5, according to a release from the city.

Carley has more than 25 years of aviation management experience and has worked as the assistant director of aviation and operations for the Metropolitan Airport Authority in Rock Island County, Illinois, according to the release.

Former airport director Kenneth Wiegand retired in December after working at the airport for 15 years.

New mixed-use development to bring $14 million entertainment area, multifamily development to US 380 in McKinney

The West Grove project is a planned 500,000-square-foot retail, restaurant and entertainment destination located at the southeast corner of US 380 and Custer Road in McKinney.

New fixtures are being installed at the Cannaday Recreation Area near Clark Middle School. The 4-acre park is being redesigned as an athletic training hub.
