New Braunfels was the second-fastest growing city nationally in 2016-17, according to new U.S. Census population estimates released at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The city’s population is close to 80,000 after jumping from 58,000 in 2010.

Texas is home to seven of the nation’s 15 fastest-growing cities, according to Census population estimates that rank percentage growth for municipalities exceeding 50,000 population.

Frisco, New Braunfels and Pflugerville finished in the top three for the overall national rankings, and McKinney (No. 9), Flower Mound (No. 11) and Cedar Park (No. 13) also made the cut.

New Braunfels is the county seat of Comal County, which was recently named the No. 2 fastest growing county in the U.S. The city has seen a steady rise in its population since 2010:

2016-17: 8 percent growth, adding 5,833 residents for a total of 79,152. Second fastest-growing city in the U.S.

2015-16: 4.7 percent growth, adding 3,311 residents for a total of 73,319. Ninth fastest-growing city in the U.S.

2014-15: 6.6 percent growth, adding 4,339 residents for a total population of 70,136. Second fastest-growing city in the U.S.

2013-14: 4.8 percent growth, adding 3,029 residents for a total population of 65,922. Thirteenth fastest-growing city in the U.S.

2012-13: 3.7 percent growth, adding 2,273 residents for a total population of 63,065. Eighteenth fastest-growing city in the U.S.

2011-12: 2.7 percent population growth, adding 1,578 residents for a total population of 60,918. Fortieth fastest-growing city in the U.S.

Other Central Texas cities ranking in the top 15 fastest-growing cities in the nation in 2016-17 include: Pflugerville, which ranked third with a 6.5 percent increase and total population of 63,359; Georgetown, which ranked sixth with a 5.4 percent increase and total population of 70,685 and Cedar Park, which ranked 13th with a 4.2 percent increase and total population of 75,704.

The city of Austin ranked 12th among the 15 U.S. cities with the largest numeric population increase between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017. Austin added 12,515 residents during that time frame. The city’s total 2017 population estimate was 950,715 residents.

The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated U.S. cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. San Antonio (No. 7), Dallas (No. 9) and Austin (No. 11) remain unchanged in rankings, and Fort Worth became the 15th-largest city—knocking Indianapolis out of the top 15.
