Convict Hill Road will be closed south of Hwy. 290 West on Feb. 21 starting at 8 p.m.

The Texas Department of Transportation is closing all Convict Hill lanes to install water lines as part of an intersection improvement project to enhance safety and mobility between Hwy. 71 and FM 1826, spokeswoman Kelli Reyna said.

Reyna explained the project is part of ongoing work to improve mobility on Hwy. 290 West. There are two intersection improvement projects, the first of which includes adding dual left-turn lanes in three locations: at FM 1826, Austin Community College campus and Convict Hill Road. TxDOT is also constructing a center-turn lane on Hwy. 290 between FM 1826 and Convict Hill Road. The second project includes adding continuous-flow intersections.

TxDOT has placed signage in both directions along the highway to alert drivers of the Convict Hill Road closure. Lanes will re-open no later than 5 a.m. on Feb. 24, according to TxDOT.

Construction began in 2013 and the estimated completion timeline is approximately 14 months. The estimated construction cost is $4.6 million. More information is at www.txdot.gov.
