Independence Day is Tuesday, so residents of Southwest Austin should expect added traffic and road closures during the earlier part of the week. Keep reading for a few more tidbits to keep in mind as you head into the week:

Austin hosts citywide Fourth of July events

  • There is no shortage of July Fourth parties and parades happening across the city this weekend. Community Impact Newspaper has compiled a list of parades, picnics, fireworks, parties and more. Remember to also plan for road and office closures over the long weekend.

El Chilito now open on Manchaca Road

  • East Austin taco bar and Tex-Mex joint El Chilito officially opened its first Southwest Austin location June 30. The new location features the signature menu items such as tacos, burritos and combination plates.


Legislators chosen to oversee local control issues during special session

  • Twenty items will be debated during an upcoming special legislative session prompted by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Legislators have been named by the governor to take on the issues of tree ordinances, spending caps of municipalities and annexation reform when the session begins July 18.

Co-working and child care facility coming to Southwest Austin

  • This fall Southwest Austin will become home to the city’s first co-working space that also offers child care. The Hive, an idea brought to life by owner Shelly Weiser, will offer supervised child care while parents work and enjoy coffee, among other offerings.


Radio Coffee & Beer to introduce new food trailer option

  • The lot adjacent to Radio Coffee & Beer will soon be home to a second breakfast trailer, East Austin's Paperboy. Best known for its savory breakfast sandwiches, sweet toasts and potato hash bowls, the trailer is slated to open in early July, according to the eatery's media team.
