The 2015-16 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, scores were released in the summer, and San Marcos High School lags behind the state average in four of the five subjects tested. The school did meet the state's accountability standard, meaning it achieved state mandated performance targets on the STAAR end-of-course exams.

Fifty percent of SMHS students tested in algebra I achieved satisfactory scores on the tests, while the state average was 81 percent.

In biology, 93 percent of SMHS students tested achieved a satisfactory score, but the state average was only 91 percent.

In English I, 53 percent of SMHS students achieved satisfactory scores, but the state average was 63 percent.

In English II, 54 percent of SMHS students achieved satisfactory scores, but the state average was 66 percent.

In U.S. history, 91 percent of SMHS students tested achieved satisfactory scores, while the state average was 94 percent.

Because of computer problems with some STAAR tests, of the approximately 3 million students tested throughout the state in 2015-16, 14,220 scores for students who had computer problems were not used when calculating the campus and district accountability results.
