Living up to “Where quality meets life”: Continued focus on affordability, including easing our citizens’ tax burdens with an eye to economic development and high-paying jobs; safety (continued resources for exceptional police protection); infrastructure (streets, public lighting, water and sewer capacity); and services (planning for improved recreation programs and facilities/youth and adult outdoor sports/programs, a senior activity center, and augmented library services). Begin a cultural initiative centered on community engagement in music and the arts. What uniquely qualifies you for this position? I am the only candidate with 12 years of Pflugerville public service (City Council) experience, including five as mayor pro tem and three as mayor. I served four years as director of the Texas Municipal League, which is comprised of over 1,000 Texas cities. I also serve as a member of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (a 10-county board), including five years as the Pflugerville representative. And, I am a native son of Pflugerville! How should Pflugerville manage its growth? We must think “into the future.” Ours must be a vision of growth that 1) attracts corporate employers with professional work opportunities, and that simultaneously builds a tax base that eases the burden on our citizens; 2) utilizes private-public partnerships to leverage resources; 3) thoughtfully zones along the tollways to maximize the financial return to our citizens; and 4) holds development/building standards to the highest standards and quality. What do you see as the greatest transportation challenge in Pflugerville, and how will you improve it? As mayor, I established relationships with surrounding municipalities and transportation agencies, including CapMetro, giving Pflugerville a seat at the discussion table for transportation planning, leading to a CapMetro pilot program for increased accessibility. We need to continue emphasizing increased transportation for our senior/mobility-impaired residents and commuter transit for our working population, including local transit connection hubs. As a member of CAMPO and City Council, I will support ongoing funding for senior access.

Closely manage the city’s annual budget to prioritize the infrastructure needs, along with the safety, security and overall quality of life of the citizens as it relates to city services. City services such as water, wastewater, roads, police and sanitation should be so seamless that citizens can take them for granted. Lowering our property tax burden along with road quality and traffic are clear areas for improvement within the city. What uniquely qualifies you for this position? I have spent my entire adult life managing people and organizations. Since college, I have held management, executive management or ownership positions in every career choice I’ve taken. I feel passionately that the city is in need of strong business leadership in a time of unprecedented growth pressures from our expanding population. The public is demanding spending controls on our local governments. It is time to put business budgeting experience to work for our citizens. How should Pflugerville manage its growth? Balance high-density, medium-density and low-density residential developments so that we don’t overly burden our school system with high-density dwellings. Improve burdensome red tape for commercial developers that would then entice strong employers that want to invest capital and create high-paying professional jobs within the city. These local jobs then provide opportunities for Pflugerville residents to have more choices in whether to commute outside of the city or work local. What do you see as the greatest transportation challenge in Pflugerville, and how will you improve it? Road congestion is going to be the most pressing transportation issue we will deal with for the next decade. We know people are moving to Pflugerville, and we can’t stop them. Knowing this, we need to prioritize new and expanded road projects that will directly affect commute time for our citizens. Public transportation can also play a role in the transportation solution, but it cannot be at an overly burdensome expense to the taxpayers.
