Round Rock Independent School District is asking for the public's feedback on two draft calendars for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 academic years which were presented to the board of trustees during its regular meeting Jan. 18.

A committee of district and campus administrators, teachers and parents designed the draft calendars. The committee was required to include 75,600 instructional minutes and chose to bank at least two days of instructional minutes in case of inclement weather days.

Because RRISD is designated as a district of innovation it is omitted from the state requirement to begin on the third Monday in August and may instead start as early as the second Monday in August.

The committee did not recommend any changes to the length of school days.

Both options recommend a start date on the Thursday of the second full week in August, which will fall on Aug. 16 in 2019. Both calendars also plan for a weeklong break at Thanksgiving, two professional development/teacher workdays in October and February, an Elementary Conference Day in October, at least 10 days for winter break and Dec. 20 and 21 as a day off for students. The Option 2 draft calendar has two professional development days and one teacher work day around winter break and the Option 1 draft calendar has one professional development day moved to the day after spring break.

The final day of instruction will fall before Memorial Day on both calendars.

Whichever option is chosen will apply to both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 academic years.

The district is seeking feedback from the community until Feb. 4. Community members are asked to view Option 1 here and Option 2 here. and then provide feedback through a survey, which is available in English and Spanish.

The committee will return to the board with a recommendation for approval at its scheduled meeting Feb. 15.
