Round Rock ISD's first day of school starts is Tuesday and its newest facility—Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School at 2800 Sauls Drive, Austin—will open its doors for the first time.

Johnson elementary was built to help relieve overcrowding at Wells Branch Elementary, and it is designated at a STEAM school, which means it will focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.

Furthermore, the school boasts new features that are unique to it in the district.

Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School Principal Gabby Nino said she worked with the building’s architect to make sure the building accommodated 21st century skills and learning techniques.

“Our building is an instructional resource for students,” Nino said. “You’ll notice immediately our building design is different from what kids might expect.”

Nino said the building is designed so there are common learning spaces between classrooms, with one wall serving as a sliding glass door so teachers can communicate and be cooperative with the other classes.

Furthermore, Nino said the school will feature lightspeed technology in the classroom, which equally distributes the teacher’s voice throughout the space in the classroom. She said the technology helps students who have learning challenges.
