Round Rock Donuts, also known as Lone Star Bakery, can trace its history back to 1926 when Reinhold R. Moehring opened the shop in downtown Round Rock. Since then the bakery’s doughnuts have become known throughout the nation, even rebranding the store to match the name of their flagship product.

“I think we get even more customers from out of town [than locally],” Bakery Operations Director Paul Guderyahn said.

Round Rock Donuts uses a secret recipe for that a former owner developed. The egg yolk used in the recipe gives the doughnuts a distinctive yellow color.

“I think people just like the fact that our doughnuts are always fresh,” Manager Colton Guderyahn said. “They come out warm all day.”

Store Manager Polo Garcia said the traditional glazed donut is the most popular item. In addition to that, the bakery offers doughnut holes, chocolate-covered doughnuts and several specialty doughnuts, such as maple glazed, strawberry glazed with sprinkles or doughnut cakes. Choices also include “fancy and filled donuts” such as apple fritters, cream bismarcks or eclairs.

The bakers start producing doughnuts at 11 p.m. and are continuously baking throughout the day. In addition to the bakers, the store employs retail workers, cake decorators and managers, totaling about 80 people.

The Texas Sized Donut is another popular item at the bakery. It weighs 2 pounds, measures about 18 inches in diameter and is the equivalent of a dozen regular doughnuts. Paul said the bakery sells up to 350 Texas Sized Donuts in a weekend.

Gabe Fermin, a San Marcos resident who said he comes to Round Rock Donuts twice a month, likes to share the Texas Sized Donut with his sisters.

“I think [the bakery’s] doughnuts are great,” Fermin said. “But what really attracts people is just great customer service.”

Round Rock Donuts also sells kolaches, cakes, cookies, pastries, custom-roasted coffee and other drinks.
