The Round Rock Fire Department is planning to convert a single family home to an alternative fire station for use during the next 10 to 15 years.

The department started renovations in April to the home at 2721 Sam Bass Road. Construction should be completed by May.

The property was purchased by the city of Round Rock in 2015 as the future site for an additional station. The department was interested in the property because it would allow faster response times to residents in northwest Round Rock.

In a press release, the city said it decided to convert the home rather than raze and rebuild because it was already suited to house a crew of firefighters.

Renovations will include a new, concrete driveway and a new garage.

"This is a great opportunity to use an existing structure that meets the needs of a fire station to support the goals of the Fire Department," Chief Robert Isbell said in a statement.

After the station is complete, it will house an engine company of three firefighters.

In total, the project will cost $250,000 from a bond fund savings from two recent projects.
