What are the biggest challenges facing Travis County Precinct One, and how would you address them?
Affordability balanced with the demands of a rapidly growing eastern Travis County is the greatest challenge. Roads and bridges need immediate attention. The demand on the sheriff and EMS and fire [departments] are increasing as the rural areas develop. Staffing and resources need to be set at a pace that meets or exceeds the growth rate and pattern. The budget needs to be closely scrutinized to ensure that needs are served and there is no waste on unnecessary projects that do not serve all of the precinct.

What qualifications do you bring to the position?
I am a former elected Pflugerville City Council member, served as mayor pro tem and am the only candidate in this race who has served in elected office. I faced decisions with a rapidly growing community and the issues that brings. I am the only candidate in this race who has worked with a government budget, having to set a tax rate to meet the budgeted needs. In 2003, I participated in the effort to lower the property tax rate. Since leaving elected office I have continued to serve Pflugerville on several boards and committees. I am an active community volunteer. My family and I have resided in Pflugerville since 1985.

What are the biggest challenges facing Travis County Precinct One, and how would you address them?
Growth has created issues in access to basic services, affordability, job creation and training, [traffic] congestion and access to public transportation, and youth development. My plan involves meetings across the precinct to set priorities and discuss specific projects to address problems. We must ensure that our vulnerable populations can access doctors, pharmacies and other health facilities. We must engage entities like Capitol Metro to build a mobility plan and build our after-school and work-based learning opportunities.

What qualifications do you bring to the position?
I have worked in state and local government for more than 30 years—from an intern working at the Texas Legislature to executive positions at the city of Austin. I have degrees from Jackson State University at the WEB DuBois Honors College and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. I was also an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and studied at the Carnegie Mellon University (the Heinz School of Public Affairs) and Harvard University (the Kennedy School of Government). I have also served as youth coach and referee in the Austin area for more than 25 years and served in several community organizations.
