Home dwellers in Round Rock can no longer keep trash and recycling containers on the street indefinitely following a July 14 city council vote.

The council approved new ordinances that limit the time garbage collection containers can be placed on the curb — not before 7 a.m. the day before collection and not after 7 p.m. the day after collection.

Trash and recycling containers also cannot be stored closer to the street than the front building line of the house.

Containers could previously be left on the street at all hours. This created potential safety hazards and unsightly conditions in neighborhoods, according to a statement from the city.

Round Rock City Council also approved an ordinance to regulate fence maintenance and repair. Fences that fall under this new regulation include ones that face the street or public facilities and fences that are visible from the street and face public drainage ways.

Regulated fences are no longer allowed to have broken, loose, or damaged components totaling more than 20 square feet over any 50-foot linear section; missing pickets, posts or gates; peeling paint; or leans of more than one foot on fences taller than four feet.

All fences in violation of the new regulations have 60 days to be repaired or demolished. This ordinance does not apply to shared fences between two or more residential lots.

The Planning and Development Services staff worked with neighborhood leaders to develop the new ordinances, according to city documents.

Correction: We incorrectly stated in the sidebar and story text that "Fences cannot have broken, loose, or damaged components totaling more than 40 percent of any 50-foot section” and fixed it to say "Fences cannot have broken, loose, or damaged components totaling more than 20 square feet over any 50-foot linear section.”
