Dazzle Coffee & Smoothies founder Corey Wertenberger said that when he began shopping his concept of a drive-thru coffee shop around the area back in 2006, the response was not entirely supportive.

“A lot of the [real estate agents] were like, ‘Oh that sounds like a neat idea, but it’s not going to work’ because it wasn’t familiar down here,” Wertenberger said.

Now, 12 years after the small cafe initially opened its drive-thru window, Dazzle Coffee has expanded to include a second location. By 2010 the business had served 250,000 customers, per Dazzle Coffee.

“We’ve gotten very fortunate with the community supporting us the way they did,” Wertenberger said.

Dazzle Coffee offers a hot and cold menu featuring cafe classics—lattes, cappuccinos and mocha drinks—as well as unconventional menu items such as hot apple cider and smoothies made with fresh fruit.

Wertenberger’s original Pflugerville location, which opened in June 2006, is a drive-thru operation inside a building that is just 12 feet wide and 28 feet long.

Both Dazzle Coffee locations serve locally sourced coffee and treats, and Wertenberger said his menus have remained consistent in both price and items. Per Wertenberger, Dazzle Coffee buys its beans from Austin-based Third Coast Roasters and buys its baked goods from Pflugerville’s Lil’ Mama’s Kitchen and Baked N’ Sconed out of Hutto. The owner said he has not touched his prices in more than four years.

Despite its diminutive stature, the cafe offers several unique items that have become daily orders for returning customers. Dazzle Coffee offers a menu item called the Six Shooter made of six shots of espresso, Ghiradelli flavor shots, steamed milk and whipped cream.

“When we first did it ... I wanted to have something that said, ‘Oh my. I can’t believe that’s something people order.’ That sort of thing,” Wertenberger said.

Several cafes around the Austin area purchase another one of Dazzle Coffee’s signature drinks— the Frezian. Wertenberger’s own invention is made of blended ice, coffee and milk.

Dazzle Coffee also caters to Pflugerville’s dog lover community, offering free treats to visiting canines.

“Most of our employees are huge animal lovers, so there’s an inappropriate shutdown of production when a dog comes through,” Wertenberger joked.
