Community members joined Hutto ISD to officially open Gus Almquist Middle School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 4.

The campus opened for the 2024-25 school year in August, welcoming sixth through eighth graders in its inaugural class.

What they're saying

The school is named for Gus Almquist, a former district trustee and employee. HISD Board President Billie Logiudice said he embodied positive traits that are part of the district's broader mission, and that she hopes students and teachers will carry on this legacy at the campus.

"Our mission in Hutto ISD is to inspire all students to achieve excellence in academics, character and community," Logiudice said. "Mr. Gus Almquist modeled this through his own words, actions and deeds as he went about impacting our school district and students so many years ago. We are excited to open the doors to new adventures, opportunities for the next generation. We are equally as excited to see the staff and students continue the legacy Mr. Almquist left us through their own learning, innovating and excelling as they inspire excellence in others here at Gus Almquist Middle School and beyond."

About the project

Construction of the $67.73 million middle school took around two years and relieves capacity concerns at the district's other middle schools, Hutto and Farley. The 160,000-square-foot campus includes facilities for expanded STEM and fine arts programs as well as a new entrepreneurship course. 978 students were enrolled to attend the new school as of Aug. 12, according to district staff, but the total operational capacity sits around 1,200 students.
