Construction has begun on a 12- to 15-foot-wide, 0.19-mile concrete trail that will connect Thompkins Drive to Shropshire Lane in the Copperfield neighborhood, according to a release from Austin Public Works.

The goal of the connector is to provide a "shorter, safer and more accessible route for many students and families walking or biking to Copperfield Elementary," according to the release. The trail eventually will be part of the planned Walnut Creek Trail.

The trail is funding by mobility bond dollars from the Urban Trails and Safe Routes to School Programs as well as District 1 Quarter-Cent funding, according to the release.

Construction on the trail is expected to last about six months.
