Students at Pflugerville ISD will have access to faster internet and new devices in the coming months following district-wide technology updates.

Executive Director of Technology Victor Valdez, said at an Oct. 15 board of trustees meeting that officials are installing  2,100 wireless access points throughout the district, or one per classroom. He said the district is about 80 percent of the way through installing the new wireless access points.

“Other districts are jealous of our [wireless initiative],” he said. “We’re hearing feedback from [students and teachers] that their connections are quicker."

Valdez said under the old system the district had access to internet speeds at 500 megabytes per second. With the new system speeds will be about 5 gigabytes per second, or about 10 times faster. Valdez said the maximum amount of data the school can use will also increase.

“There wasn’t a day that went by that we weren’t at 100 percent of access [with the old system],” Valdez said. “We heard from students that it was slow."

In addition to the wireless initiative, PfISD will be investing in about 5,000 devices for educational uses. The district has not selected what devices they will be using.

“The idea is to find out what device is needed for each need," Valdez said.
